The Division of Rehabilitation Medicine operates the 22-bed Sue and John L. Weinberg inpatient rehabilitation unit (IRU) at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, located on the 17th floor of the Baker Building. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital also operates the William Randolph Hearst Inpatient Rehabilitation Unitat the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
Medical and rehabilitative care on the IRU is under the direction of a full-time faculty member of the Weill Cornell Division of Rehabilitation Medicine. This unit provides intensive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to individuals with a wide range of diagnoses including stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, brain and spinal cord tumors, multiple sclerosis, hip fracture, amputations, burns, cancer diagnoses, cardiac and pulmonary disorders and general medical and surgical debility. Patients have a unique opportunity to have their acute care physician remain a part of their medical team, and also have access to on-site physicians in a wide variety of specialties.
Nursing care is provided on a 24-hour basis to address the medical, physical and comfort needs of the patients, while keeping in mind the goal of helping the individual achieve functional independence. Social work services and therapeutic recreation provide support for the social, leisure, and spiritual needs of the patients and their families.
The rehabilitation team is comprised of caring, dedicated professionals striving to help the patient achieve their personal goals so that they may successfully reach the ultimate goal of community re-integration. Outpatient services are also available after discharge.
