Joshua Brian Lewis, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Joshua Lewis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and has advanced fellowship training in pain medicine. Having seen how chronic pain can significantly affect a person’s quality of life, he is dedicated to helping patients reclaim their lives through evidence-based medicine and compassionate, individualized care. His clinical interests center on the management of chronic pain through opioid-sparing pain management strategies. He has a special interest in the treatment of spine, peripheral nerve, and joint-related pain. Understanding that chronic pain is complex and simultaneously unique to each individual, he utilizes a multimodal, holistic approach to address chronic pain and its underlying biomechanical and physiologic causes.Dr. Lewis utilizes a variety of interventional-based therapies including ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided injections, regenerative medicine, and minimally invasive therapies including neuromodulation and radiofrequency ablation. His multimodal approach also includes physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and strategies to address the psychological factors associated with chronic pain.

Dr. Lewis completed his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University which was then followed by a PhD in Physiology and Developmental Biology also at Brigham Young University. After graduate school, he earned his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, serving as Chief Resident during his final year.

Dr. Lewis then completed his pain medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.Dr. Lewis’s research interests are broad but include epigenetic mechanisms involved in the development of chronic pain, pain biosignatures, neuromodulation, regenerative medicine, non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment of neck, back and peripheral nerve pain. He additionally has significant interest in emerging technologies and medications to treat chronic pain.

Dr. Lewis prides himself on connecting with and advocating for his patients. As a result, he is active in many national societies including the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP), the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR), American Academy of Pain Medicine, North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS). He currently is a part of the Advocacy and Policy Committee for NANS. He additionally is serving as a member of both the Policy and Advocacy Committee as well as the Research Committee with the AAPM.
